Constance Baker Motley had an illustrious career as a public servant and blazed many paths as the “first.” She was the first black woman:
* admitted to Columbia University Law School;
* elected to the New York State Senate;
* chosen as Manhattan Borough President;
* to argue before the United States Supreme Court; and
* to serve as a federal judge (and first woman to serve on the bench in the Southern District of New York).
